Education & Training Committee

Mission

To further the strategic plan by defining the educational needs of the membership, assuring compliance with ACCME requirements, developing educational programs to support recertification and teaching, and assessing how well the organization meets those needs. To further the strategic plan by assuring an adequate supply of well-trained manpower necessary to support research, clinical care, management and administration, and teaching.

The specific charge to the committee is to ensure that the AGA Institute meets the relevant educational needs of its constituencies in a timely, effective and efficient manner, through, among other things, (1) assessing and establishing AGA members’ educational needs; (2) evaluating the extent to which the AGA Institute's educational programs have met their stated objectives; (3) ensuring that educational programs and products are educationally sound and comply with all ACCME requirements; (4) formulating AGA Institute policies that will help ensure a continued supply of qualified gastroenterologists in the U.S.; (5) developing recommendations and resources that will help maintain and advance the quality of gastroenterology training programs; and (6) developing policies and recommendations concerning the qualifications and training needed by health-care professionals with respect to gastroenterological procedures and services.

Committee Structure

The committee consists of thirteen members plus the chair. Included in committee membership should be a member who has recently completed (or is in) training to serve as a resource on trainee issues and perspectives. One member should be a non-physician provider (NPP) who serves as a non-voting member. The chair of the council shall attend all committee meetings and serve as a non-voting ex-officio member. The clinician-educator councillor (who shall not count against the maximum membership) shall serve as the AGA Governing Board’s liaison to the committee and shall serve as a non-voting ex-officio member.

Appointment terms of the chair and all committee members shall be three years, with one-third expiring annually. A chair-elect (who shall not count against the maximum membership) shall be appointed one year before the end of the term of the chair.

Committee Chair Qualifications

  • Previous experience as an AGA/AGA Institute committee member.
  • Knowledge of and experience with professional education concepts and technologies.
  • Familiar with ACCME and ACGME requirements and policies.

Committee Functions

  • Implements relevant strategic directions from the strategic plan assigned to the committee; reviews the strategic plan to determine new and better ways to achieve association goals.
  • Provides input on strategic trends and opportunities and suggests adjustments to the strategic plan for the chair to communicate to the AGA Leadership Cabinet.
  • Conducts periodic surveys of the membership to determine educational needs (i.e., knowledge gaps) and desires; communicates survey results to the board, council and other AGA Institute entities; conducts an annual assessment of how the AGA Institute met members education needs.
  • Assures AGA Institute and all educational programs, projects and materials involving continuing medical education comply with ACCME requirements; expeditiously reviews and approves all AGA Institute CME programs.
  • Oversees development and operation of the Postgraduate Course at DDW®, GTP®, DDSEP® and recertification materials and resources.
  • Responsible for recertification policies (ABIM) and other GI credentialing programs.
  • Investigates new educational technologies and mechanisms and recommends use by the AGA Institute.
  • Oversees educational content of the web and portal by applying general corporate policies.
  • Reviews core curriculum and works to secure appropriate changes to maintain currency and quality.
  • Develops educational and evaluative products, programs and resources for training programs and teachers.
  • Develops programs, products and resources to permit trainees and young members to make sound career and financial decisions and also to develop skills for academic achievement.
  • Recommends policies relative to “the match” related matters.
  • Keeps abreast of manpower issues and recommends appropriate policies to the board.
  • Develops policies and guidelines that define the qualifications, competencies, and credentialing associated with gastroenterological procedures and services; this may involve working cooperatively with other organizations.
  • Liaises with the council to facilitate the development of educational and training programs within and outside of DDW.
  • Other functions as assigned by the board

Meetings

The Education & Training Committee holds two face-to-face meetings per year and teleconferences as deemed necessary by the chair.
