Committee Activities

The Practice Management and Economics Committee (PMEC) is committed to ensuring that gastroenterology practices have the capabilities to practice effectively in the face of various challenges.

Payor Policy Work Group (PPWG): Working together with the Clinical Practice and Quality Management Committee and Public Affairs and Advocacy Committee, the PMEC is engaged with payors to review and comment on regional and national medical policies affecting access to proven procedures, tests and drugs for gastroenterologists and their patients. View the work of the PPWG.

AGA Washington Insider: PMEC members regularly contribute insights to the AGA’s policy blog

AMA CPT® Editorial Panel: The AGA works closely with the ACG, ASGE and other specialty societies to ensure providers are able to appropriately report procedures and services via CPT codes. Over the years, the societies have been involved in developing new codes and revising existing CPT codes for GI procedures. Learn more about the CPT process

Relative Value Scale Update Committee (RUC): The AGA works closely with the ASGE to continuously evaluate and review relative value units (RVU) and practice expenses for physician work through the AMA’s RUC process. Learn more about why the RUC is important and how the process works.

AGA CPT & RUC Advisor: Joel V. Brill, MD, AGAF, CHCQM
Alternate AGA RUC Advisor: Jaya Agrawal, MD

Center for GI Innovation and Technology: Through the center, the AGA works with key regulatory bodies and the commercial payor community to better understand their specific requirements for coverage, adoption and reimbursement and, in turn, will translate that information to the field. Through the center, AGA will advocate for a transparent and fair process that does not stifle innovation.
