Nutrition & Obesity

Dear Member of the Nutrition and Obesity Section and interested others:

Thank you for making our sessions at the 41st annual DDW® in New Orleans, LA scientifically relevant and exciting! If you have specific feedback regarding speakers sponsored by the Nutrition and Obesity (N&O) Section at DDW, please share your thoughts with us. We will do our best to consider your comments and concerns as we plan our program for next DDW 2011 in Chicago.

One of our section's abstracts "Leptin Resistance in Vagal Afferent Neurons Leads to Decreased Cholecystokinin Signaling in Diet-induced Obese Rats" was presented at the successful AGA Institute Basic Science Plenary Session.

This year the N&O section accepted the majority of the abstracts submitted. The accepted abstracts are designated as oral or poster presentations and of distinction based on their ranking by our dedicated abstract reviewers.

N&O Abstract Selection 2010
Total Abstracts submitted 111
Accepted Abstracts 93

Each June, N&O section descriptors are reviewed to optimize scientific relevance and minimize overlapping topics with other AGA Institute Sections and to encourage both clinical research and basic science abstract submissions. The current list of abstract descriptors is as follows. (N&O descriptors may change as we go forward to DDW 2011.) We would like to thank our abstract review Committee Chairs and members for generously sharing their expertise and time in order to ensure that the most novel and relevant developments in Nutrition and Obesity were shared at DDW.

Section leaders will review committee membership this summer for abstract review committees to confirm the final composition for DDW 2011 committees.

Members interested in participating in the various activities of the Section should contact us at the addresses below. We are particularly interested in increasing participation by junior investigators/clinicians and international members at this time.

If you are interested in serving as a reviewer for any of our abstract descriptors, please let us know. Please cite the abstract descriptor for which you would be interested in reviewing.

Please submit your invaluable ideas about the topics and invited speakers that you would like to hear at next year's DDW. The more specific you can be, the better (title, individual talks, speakers, learning objectives). Please forward your suggestions to John Whiton, AGA Institute by July 6, 2010.

This year the Nutrition and Obesity Section is considering submitting a proposal for the James W. Freston Single Topic Conference funded by the Takeda Endowment. This conference is typically basic or translational and will be held in Chicago in the Fall of 2012.

Past and pending symposia in this series are as follows:

  • Host-Microbial Interactions in Digestive Health and Disease, March 24-26 2006
  • Stem Cells in Gastrointestinal Development, Regeneration and Neoplasia, September 8-9, 2006
  • GI Response to Injury, October 3-6, 2007
  • AGA Institute/ANMS Course on Gastroparesis and Functional Dyspepsia, January 16-17, 2009
  • Celiac Disease: Broadening Horizons, September 11-12, 2009
  • GI Response to Injury, September 28- October 2, 2010
  • Oncology for the Gastroenterologist: Horizons for the Future, October 14-15, 2011

Please recommend new descriptors for abstracts.

The deadline for submitting a proposal is January 2011: send your ideas for a nutrition based 2 day meeting directly to Alan Buchman

Thank you for your continuing strong support of the Nutrition and Obesity Section.

Sincerely,
