John W. Garrett, MD, AGAF, studied biology at Northwestern University, Evanston, IL, and received his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College, New York, NY. Dr. Garrett completed his medical internship and residency at University of North Carolina (UNC), Chapel Hill, and was a UNC clinical instructor at Wake Medical Center, Raleigh, NC, before going on to complete his gastroenterology fellowship at UNC Chapel Hill.

Dr. Garrett has practiced with Asheville Gastroenterology Associates, NC, since completing his fellowship at Chapel Hill, and served as president from 2004 to 2009, and again from 2011 to 2015. He currently serves as vice chair for the six-hospital Mission Health System Board, where he serves as chair of the quality and credentials committees, as well as a member of the regional health committee. Dr. Garrett is also a board member for Mission Health Partners, the largest regional accountable care organization in North Carolina. In addition to his interest in esophageal diseases and motility issues, he has a special interest in population health and the transition from volume to value-based payment systems.

An active member of AGA since 2004, Dr. Garrett has served on the Practice Management and Economics Committee, Government Affairs Committee, and Nominating Committee. In May 2017, he was elected to serve on the governing board as practice councillor.
