Congressional Advocates Program Overview

The AGA Congressional Advocates Program (CAP) is designed to increase our grassroots advocacy efforts in fighting to advance the science and practice of gastroenterology. With the enactment of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, declining reimbursement for specialty services, and growing budget deficits, the AGA needs your help to increase our voice on Capitol Hill. We thank those members who we have heard from who are willing to be involved, and hope more will join our efforts.

The goals of the CAP are not only to help members of Congress understand the impact of proposed legislation and regulation on gastroenterologists and the delivery of quality GI care, but also to motivate gastroenterologists to become involved in the political process.

Gastroenterologists who are active participants in the CAP will help the AGA facilitate these goals by being aware of pending legislation at the federal level and being prepared to discuss the impact on gastroenterology, patients and the local community. We also envision that advocates will represent the views of gastroenterology to elected officials in those districts and states and serve as a resource to the elected official on issues facing gastroenterology. The AGA will assist in providing information on legislation, position statements and other educational materials to assist our advocates.
