AGA Selects New Leaders
Loren Laine, MD, AGAF, has been selected by the Nominating Committee to be vice president of the AGA Institute. If confirmed by a membership vote, Dr. Laine’s VP term will begin at DDW® 2010 and culminate with presidency of the organization in 2012. Long involved with the AGA, Dr. Laine most recently served as chair of the council. He is professor of medicine at the University of Southern California, Keck School of Medicine. Also joining the AGA Governing Board at DDW 2010, pending confirmation by membership vote, are Sheila E. Crowe, MD, AGAF, of the University of Virginia, as councillor-at-large, and Helen Sheilds, of the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, as education/training councillor.

Leadership Nominations
Nominations must be submitted by Oct. 1.
The AGA Nominating Committee, chaired by Robert S. Sandler, MD, MPH, AGAF, is in the midst of identifying candidates for the offices of vice president, basic research councillor, community private practice councillor and eight nominees for the 2011–2012 Nominating Committee ballot.
AGA members are encouraged to submit nominations to ensure that the most qualified and committed candidates are selected to serve next year.

AGA Institute Congratulates Winners of Masters Awards in Gastroenterology
The 16th annual Masters Awards in Gastroenterology, in cooperation with AGA Institute, were presented at DDW® 2010. The awards recognize outstanding achievement in basic or clinical research in digestive sciences and sustained achievement in digestive science.
Apply for a Committee Appointment
Committee members are appointed to serve on AGA and AGA Institute committees for three-year terms. Each year, as one third of committee members rotate off, the AGA Institute president-elect selects members to fill the vacancies. Members are encouraged to nominate themselves or others for appointment by sending an e-mail to the president-elect, in care of the national office, with their committee interest and curriculum vitae.

The AGA offers research funding support through the Foundation for Digestive Health and Nutrition.
Career Development Awards provide funding support for independent research careers in gastrointestinal related fields and supports the career development of young investigators.
Established Investigator Awards provide funding that supports the developing research careers of junior investigators, in the area of gastrointestinal related fields, and provides funding mechanisms that supplement the research careers of established investigators.
