AGA Research Service Award

Established in 2006, this award recognizes an individual who has significantly advanced gastroenterological science and research through dedicated efforts. The award recipient will be recognized at the Researchers Recognition Celebraton during Digestive Disease Week® (DDW).

Eligibility

Nominees must have dedicated an extraordinary effort to advocacy for the advancement of gastroenterological science and research. Elected officials and individuals in the public as well as private sectors are eligible. This award will be reviewed annually; however, it will be presented only if a noteworthy nominee is presented. Nominees are not required to be AGA members.

Nomination Process

Nominations are solicited by the AGA Chair via a call for nominations letter in July to the following constituencies: AGA Institute Governing Board, council section chairs, committee chairs, task force chairs and membership-at-large; deans of U.S. medical schools and academic-based chiefs of medicine; chiefs of surgery and pediatrics; GI division chiefs and training directors of major academic institutions; and trainee members of the AGA.

Nominating materials should contain two letters of nomination that specifically outline the contributions of the nominee and a curriculum vitae or resume. Nominations are not carried over from year to year.

Selection Process

The selection committee is comprised of the chair and vice chair of the AGA Institute Research Policy Committee and three at-large members of the research policy committee, as selected by the committee chair. Recipient(s) will be selected based upon:

  • Detailed documentation in the nomination letters that specifically outline the contributions of the nominee,
  • The nominees’ credentials and achievements as documented in the curriculum vitae or resume.

Nomination packages are forwarded to the selection committee for review by Nov. 30. The committee meets by conference call in January to select the recipient.

Recognition

The recipient will be presented with a crystal award during the Researchers Recognition Celebration at DDW.

Nomination Submission Process

The deadline for receipt of nominations is midnight on Nov. 11. The nomination package must contain a curriculum vitae, a nomination letter, and up to three supporting letters(s) of recommendation (maximum two pages, per letter), that identify the specific accomplishments of the nominee. If the accomplishments of the nominee have been achieved through his or her profession, the nominator must specifically outline how the nominee has displayed extraordinary effort to advocate for the advancement of gastroenterological science and research. Nominees will be included in the selection process for one cycle after initial submission (meaning the full packet will not have to be resubmitted unless the nominator wishes to do so). The above noted documents must be combined into one PDF file and e-mailed to awards@gastro.org. Hard copies will not be accepted. Please forward all questions about this and other AGA Recognition Awards to 301-222-4012 or via e-mail to awards@gastro.org.
