Held in conjunction with the Academic Skills Workshop.
Applications are no longer being accepted. Applicants will be notified of their status by Dec. 15, 2013.
This workshop is designed to introduce MD-PhD students to a wide range of research areas and career opportunities available to physician-scientists in gastroenterology. The workshop includes a series of short lectures by investigators who are academic leaders in GI. These leaders will discuss residency and fellowship programs, postdoctoral training, the wide spectra of GI research opportunities, pathways to investigative careers in GI, as well as the challenges and opportunities of melding investigative with clinical activities.
Lectures will be followed by small group and one-on-one, in-depth discussions between students and faculty. Topics will include transitioning basic research from PhD thesis work into successful postdoctoral projects, tackling multi-disciplinary approaches to complex biological problems in GI, and integrating basic, translational and clinical research approaches. Specific research areas such as the microbiome, proteomics, systems biology, stem cells, metabolism, and others, will also be discussed.
Full travel grants will be provided to selected students and some meals on site will be covered. Accepted students will receive a free one-year student membership to the AGA, and one-year subscriptions to the AGA journals Gastroenterology and Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology.
