Applications for the Academic Skills Workshop Are Due Oct. 25

October 10, 2013

With just two weeks remaining, the deadline to submit an application for the AGA-AASLD Academic Skills Workshop is fast approaching. Junior faculty and trainees who want to learn how to succeed in academic medicine should apply today.

The workshop provides access to a faculty with years of knowledge and proven success in advancing their careers at teaching hospitals and academic medical centers. Faculty will share their unique experiences and recommendations through interactive lectures and mentor-mentee pairings. Participants will be able to form a flexible strategy that will help with setting and achieving goals throughout their career.

Participants will also be able to speak with faculty about their proposed research project and get advice on meeting the requirements of the grant application process. Other topics to be addressed are:

  • Principals of grant writing.
  • Identifying sources of grants for basic GI science and clinical research.
  • Women's issues in gastroenterology.
  • Composing scientific manuscripts and submitting for publication.
  • Pathways, tracts and expectations in academic medicine.
  • Career advice.

The workshop will be held at Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego, CA, March 22 and 23, 2014. Forty candidates will be selected to participate in the workshop; 10 of the forty spots are reserved for underrepresented minorities. Full travel grants, covering the cost of accommodations, airfare and some meals on site, will be provided to all participants. Women candidates are strongly encouraged to apply as well.

Participants will be notified of their acceptance via email by Jan. 6, 2014.
