Kim Barrett Appointed President-Elect of APS

Congratulations to Kim E. Barrett, PhD, AGAF, who was elected as president-elect of the American Physiological Society. Dr. Barrett obtained her BSc and PhD degrees from the Department of Chemistry at University College London. Following a post-doctoral fellowship at the NIH, she joined the faculty of UC San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine in 1985, and rose to her current rank of professor of medicine in 1996.

Her research interests center on the normal and abnormal biology of the intestinal epithelium and their relevance to a variety of digestive diseases, including inflammatory bowel diseases, infectious diarrheal diseases and peptic ulcer disease. She has received a number of honors for her research and was awarded the degree of Doctor of Medical Science, honoris causa, by Queens University Belfast. She has been highly active in professional societies and in scholarly editing. She is also the author or editor of several books and monographs and almost 200 peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters and reviews.

In 2006, she was appointed as dean of graduate studies at UCSD. In this capacity, she serves as a member of the senior academic management team and oversees the recruitment, academic advancement and climate for more than 4,000 masters and doctoral students. She also guides the development of new graduate programs and planning for an anticipated 50 percent growth in the graduate population in the next 10 to12 years.
