AGA Joins CRC Community in Seeking State Recognition of Awareness Month

Jan. 15, 2015

AGA and colorectal cancer advocates are working together to turn the country blue this March in recognition of Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month 2015. In addition to a national proclamation, this campaign aims to secure proclamations of CRC awareness in all 50 states.

AGA has joined Fight Colorectal Cancer and a united group of colorectal cancer advocates to turn the country blue. Volunteers and organizations are requesting state governments to issue proclamations recognizing March 2015 as Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month — a campaign called “Blue Star States.” The blue star is the symbol of colorectal cancer.

“State proclamations bring a lot of value to our communities across the country and serve as vehicles for local advocates to highlight that colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in this country. It is an opportunity for government officials to stand up and support screening and the prevention of this particular cancer. Each year, it is very exciting to see each state join our fight by proclaiming March as Colorectal Cancer Awareness month,” said Anjee Davis, president of Fight Colorectal Cancer.

This is the second year for the national initiative that engages advocates impacted by colon and rectal cancer from every state in the U.S. Last year, all 50 states received proclamation requests; 46 issued proclamations and two states issued letters from the governor highlighting the importance of the cause in March 2014.

To make 2015 a success, several organizations have joined the award-winning campaign to strengthen the voice of the advocate community and reach the collective goal. Partner organizations involved in the campaign include: AliveAndKickn; Colon Cancer Coalition; Colon Cancer Prevention Project; the Colon Club; Michael’s Mission; the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates (SGNA); and AGA.
