Bundled Payments for Colonoscopy Inevitable — But Maybe Not a Bad Thing

Oct. 16, 2014

AGA's president John I. Allen, MD, MBA, AGAF, discusses bundled payment models and the AGA bundled payment framework for colonoscopy in a new article in General Surgery News.

In an article in this month’s General Surgery News, AGA Institute President John I. Allen, MD, MBA, AGAF, discusses the need for GIs “to consider bundled payments in their negotiations with payors, hospitals and health systems.”

He says, “For a number of years, we have been demonstrating the quality and value of colonoscopy in terms of cancer reduction, but now we are facing unprecedented pressures in terms of cost. We are getting to a tipping point where the unit payment is going to be below the unit cost for many of us … If we want to preserve this important lifesaving tool, we are going to have to start thinking about different ways of packaging it.”

AGA developed a bundled payment framework for colonoscopy performed for colorectal cancer screening or surveillance to provide GIs with a framework that they can use when negotiating with their local entities. Learn more.
