Learn About Gut Microbiota from Your Own Stool Sample

Dec. 18, 2017

AGA and the American Gut Project are seeking AGA members interested in having their stool samples analyzed.

The AGA Center for Gut Microbiome Research and Education and the American Gut Project are collaborating on the third annual Active Learning Session on the Gut Microbiome at Digestive Disease Week® (DDW) 2018. This unique session invites AGA members to submit their stool samples for analysis.

In 2016, we used 16S ribosomal RNA profiling to read out the name tags of bacteria in each stool sample. And in 2017, we added shotgun metagenomics to get information about the rest of the genome. For 2018, we’ll add metabolomics to better understand the chemistry of the stool sample. We're seeking U.S.-based AGA members interested in having their stool samples analyzed by metabolomics.

Participating AGA members will receive a personalized report on their gut microbiota from the American Gut Project. In addition, deidentified AGA cohort data will be presented as part of the AGA Center for Gut Microbiome Research and Education’s Active Learning Session at DDW 2018, where attendees will learn more about the latest in gut microbiome science and technology, and what it means for health and disease.

This opportunity is limited to AGA members. Trainee members — look out for an email the week of Dec. 18 with a special code to claim a free kit. All AGA members are welcome to participate at the special discounted price of $250, which covers the cost of the sampling kit as well as metabolomics and shotgun metagenomic sequencing.

To participate, AGA members should log in to gastro.org and sign up to participate. The deadline to sign up is Jan. 15, 2018. The stool samples need to be returned to the American Gut Project by Feb. 12, 2018.
