Surviving the Daily Email Onslaught

Sept. 27, 2017

Simple steps to help you combat a bursting inbox.

With a barrage of meeting invites, patient correspondences, reports, publication notices, newsletters and more, managing email can quickly get out of hand. Brijen J. Shah, MD, through trial and error and in talking to others, has compiled these best practices to help you gain control of your inbox:

  1. Be deliberate when checking email.
  2. Take action when managing email.
  3. Create folders.
  4. Use delayed delivery.
  5. Keep recurrent emails for future use.
  6. Flags.
  7. Don’t play email ping pong.
  8. Don’t be the person who group replies or replies simply to show you are checking your email.
  9. Let your recipient know if you expect a response or not, and let that person know if the response should be via email or by other means.
  10. Start fresh.
  11. Unsubscribe, unsubscribe, unsubscribe.
