Urge Congress to Vote on CRC Screening Act

Sept. 28, 2016

Removing financial barriers to colorectal cancer screening for Medicare beneficiaries will help save lives.

When the Affordable Care Act was enacted in 2010, it included a technical error allowing certain Medicare beneficiaries – those who have a screening colonoscopies that turn therapeutic – to be responsible for coinsurance payments.  AGA, our sister societies and several patient groups have since been advocating that the Obama administration fix the technical error in the law, but the administration says it lacks the authority and has deferred to Congress.

Now, Rep. Charlie Dent, R-PA, and Rep. Donald Payne, Jr., D-NJ, have introduced the Removing Barriers to Screening Act in the House, which would fix the Medicare coinsurance problem for beneficiaries.

Since the legislation has the support of a majority (238) House members, the sponsors are circulating a letter to House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-WI, and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-CA, asking that they schedule a vote on the bill before the end of the 114th Congress.

Contact Your Representative
Given the small window that Congress has to conduct legislative business during the post-election lame duck session, AGA encourages members to contact their members of Congress to encourage them to sign the Dent-Payne letter and bring H.R.1220 to the floor for a vote before the end of the session.

Screening saves lives, but the financial barriers to screening can prevent beneficiaries from accessing lifesaving screenings. Ask your member of Congress to sign the Dent-Payne letter today.
