4 Tips for a High-Quality Colonoscopy

New video answers the question: "what makes a high-quality screening colonoscopy?"

Contact: Rachel Shubert

Bethesda, MD (Feb. 8, 2016) — While patients care about how much they’re spending on health-care services, they don’t always understand the difference between cost and quality. AGA has developed a video to encourage discussion among patients and physicians on what makes a high-quality colonoscopy: “Questions to Ask About a High-Quality Colonoscopy.”

To help us raise awareness of this important topic, we are encouraging media to embed this video on their website, on social media or in articles.

The video highlights the following four questions and answers:

1. How often does your GI reach the start of the large intestine? The most skilled doctors reach it more than 95 percent of the time.

2. How often do patients’ poor bowel prep lead to incomplete exams? Hopefully, it’s less than 15 percent of the time.

3. How often does your GI find polyps during routine screenings? It’s common to find them in about 25 percent of routine screenings.

4. When should you return for a follow-up exam? Most patients don’t need another exam for 10 years.

Colorectal cancer screenings begin at age 50 for average-risk individuals. While there are other screening options, colonoscopy is the most accurate test for cancer of the colon and rectum, proven to detect the disease early and save lives. Learn more in the AGA patient brochure.
