San Francisco Physician Receives Distinguished Educator Award
SF General Hospitals John P. Cello, MD, Honored for Outstanding Career
Bethesda, Maryland (May 15, 2005) The American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) has named John P. Cello, MD, the recipient of its 2005 Distinguished Educator Award for his accomplishments during his career in gastroenterology. The AGA Distinguished Educator Award honors an individual who has made outstanding contributions as an educator in gastroenterology on both local and national levels. Contributions may include longtime efforts dedicated to training fellows; publishing educational documents and/or teaching seminars and classes. The award will be presented to Dr. Cello later this month in Chicago, Illinois during Digestive Disease Week® (DDW®), the largest international conference devoted to the science and practice of gastroenterology.
Dr. Cello is a professor of medicine and of surgery at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Cello earned his medical degree magna cum laude in 1969 from Harvard Medial School, Boston, and was then an intern at Cornell-New York Hospital, a medical resident at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, Boston, and fellow at the Veterans Affairs Hospital, Washington.
After his gastroenterology fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco, he joined the faculty, where he is also director of medical education for the Division of Gastroenterology at San Francisco General Hospital. Also with the university, he was chief of gastroenterology, hepatology and clinical nutrition at San Francisco General Hospital for 20 years.
Dr. Cello, who has been honored for his excellence in teaching on several occasions, is an ad hoc reviewer for six medical journals, including Gastroenterology and the New England Journal of Medicine.
The AGA is dedicated to the mission of advancing the science and practice of gastroenterology. Founded in 1897, the AGA is the oldest medical-specialty society in the United States. The AGAs more than 14,000 members include physicians and scientists who research, diagnose and treat disorders of the gastrointestinal tract and liver. On a monthly basis, the AGA publishes two highly respected journals, Gastroenterology and Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology.
DDW is the largest international gathering of physicians, researchers and academics in the fields of gastroenterology, hepatology, endoscopy and gastrointestinal surgery. Jointly sponsored by the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, the American Gastroenterological Association, the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, DDW takes place May 14-19, 2005, at McCormick Place in Chicago, Illinois. The meeting showcases approximately 5,000 abstracts and hundreds of lectures on the latest advances in GI research, medicine and technology.
