AGA Journals and Newspaper Social Media Editors

The goal of the social media editor positions is to increase the dissemination of AGA publications’ content on social media, positively impacting journal engagement, driving traffic to the publication websites and broadly reaching both professional and lay audiences.

AGA invites applications for two social media editor positions to support online promotion of the AGA journals GastroenterologyClinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology (CGH), Cellular and Molecular Gastroenterology and Hepatology (CMGH), Techniques and Innovations in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (TIGE), as well as AGA’s newspaper GI & Hepatology News and the newspaper’s quarterly e-newsletter, The New Gastroenterologist. Based on the applicants’ areas of expertise, one social media editor will focus on clinically relevant research and news coverage and one will focus on basic-science-based research and news. Each position is three years in duration, beginning Mar. 1, 2020, and ending Feb. 28, 2023. Successful candidates will be selected based on their expertise, the success of their already-established social media channel(s) and the preferences of the journals’ editors-in-chief.

Position description

The selected applicants will partner with the publications’ social media staff at AGA’s headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland, and the editors-in-chief of the related publications to promote articles-in-press and monthly issue content. The successful candidates will use their medical and/or scientific expertise to provide insights into the content they promote and spark further discussion online. These positions are primarily “virtual;” the bulk of the work will happen over email, teleconferences and video chats.

Responsibilities

  • The selected applicants will be expected to fulfill the following duties:
  • 1. Create posts on your social media channel(s) at least three times a week that promote the AGA publications noted above. The successful applicant is required to have an active presence on Twitter, which will be the primary platform of this position. Additional activity on other social media channels (e.g., Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram) is welcome but not required. Posts can include retweets/sharing of content from the AGA and journals’ social media accounts focused on the publications but should primarily be original posts from your own account. This will require regular review of the journals’ and newspaper’s websites for new content to share.
  • 2. Work with AGA’s publications social media staff to review upcoming journal issue line-ups and identify key articles for social media dissemination and content for paid promotion on the journal social media accounts.
  • 3. Promote blog posts from the AGA Journals Blog.
  • 4. Debut and maintain a recurring journal club on Twitter to discuss the latest research published in the AGA journals (frequency to be determined). Solicit additional moderator(s) from Twitter based on the content area of the article being discussed.
  • 5. Attend the in-person BOE annual meetings held during Digestive Disease Week® (DDW) (air fare and lodging will not be covered by AGA).

Requirements

The successful candidates will have experience identifying and promoting newsworthy content, as well as excellent judgment that expands the outstanding reputation of AGA’s publications. The candidates must demonstrate a record of academic achievement as evidenced by publications and professional activities. Board certification in gastroenterology and hepatology is required for the clinical social media editor (this is not required for the basic science editor position). Early-career applicants must be in an accredited gastroenterology fellowship at the time of application and have completed their first year of clinical training. The applicants will be required to complete AGA’s conflict of interest disclosure and confidentiality statements, and adhere to the journal’s conflict of interest policy. The editors cannot serve on, or accept appointment to, the boards of editors of any competing journal during the length of the position.

Honorarium

Each social media editor will receive an annual honorarium of $1,000.
