2015 Scholar Award Supports CRC Research

Sept. 2, 2015

The 2015 AGA Research Scholar Award will help Jeffrey K. Lee, MD, MAS, with his long-term goal of becoming an independent investigator.

Jeffrey K. Lee, MD, MAS, of the University of California, San Francisco, discussed the impact that the 2015 AGA Research Scholar Award will have on both his current research, which focuses on colorectal cancer, and his future research and career.

"I would like to thank the AGA Institute, the AGA Research Foundation, and the selection committee for this generous award, which will be an invaluable asset to the start of my career as a young clinical investigator in the field of colorectal cancer prevention research," Dr. Lee said.

How will the Research Scholar Award impact your research?

"The AGA award will allow me to evaluate the long-term risk of colorectal cancer in patients after colonoscopic polypectomy according to polyp characteristics in a large community-based cohort. Colorectal cancer remains a significant public health concern in the United States and worldwide, but there is limited data available in the literature to determine the optimal timing of a follow-up surveillance colonoscopy after the initial screening exam, particularly for patients with adenoma," he noted.

How will this award influence your career?
"It will help me achieve my long-term goal of becoming an independent investigator generating and implementing evidence on effective strategies for optimizing colorectal cancer screening. Specifically, through this award I will be able to acquire the necessary training in the design and conduct of population-based cohort studies, medical informatics and advanced statistical methods, which will lay a solid foundation to successfully compete for future NIH funding," Dr. Lee added.
