AGA Celebrates National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

Feb. 28, 2013

Every week during Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month we will highlight AGA resources for you. This week: read a special CRC issue of AGA Perspectives and share AGA education materials with your patients. Also: dress in blue on Friday to raise awareness of CRC!

March officially marks National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, but for AGA and most GIs, every day brings another reason to raise awareness of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening and prevention with patients. AGA firmly believes that all Americans should have access to lifesaving CRC screenings.

To that end, we’re once again partnering with CDC to connect volunteer gastroenterologists with programs in six states that provide free screening. Thanks to everyone who volunteered! The screening programs will occur during March. Watch this space for more details.

Throughout March, we will share CRC-related information with you. This week’s highlights:

The Gold Standard: The Debate Over Whether Colonoscopy is the Best Screening Test

In honor of National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, the February/March issue of AGA Perspectives focuses on the detection and prevention of the disease. In the point/counter-point, Dr. Sidney Winawer argues that “The ‘Preferred’ Test for CRC Prevention Is Colonoscopy,” while Dr. Philip Schoenfeld counters that “The ‘Preferred’ Test for CRC Prevention Is Not Colonoscopy... In the Future.”

Additional articles of interest include Dr. David Lieberman’s thoughts on when to stop screening and surveillance and ideas on improving outcomes amongst African Americans from Dr. Samir Gupta.

AGA offers a number of materials for you to share with your patients about colorectal cancer screening:

Dress in Blue on March 1

AGA and the Colon Cancer Alliance encourage you to wear blue to help raise awareness about colon cancer and encourage others to get their colon checked. We want to see you! Either send pictures of you and your staff to communications@gastro.org or post directly to the AGA Facebook page
