AGA Sponsors Successful National Colorectal Cancer Awareness and Screening Day

Sept. 30, 2010

Around the country, AGA members give back to their communities throughout the year in a number of ways. During Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, many gastroenterologists offer free colonoscopies to uninsured and underinsured Americans.

In March 2010, the AGA organized the first ever National Colorectal Cancer Awareness and Screening Day. Programs in 10 states around the country were invited to coordinate their free colonoscopy programs during the screening day, including Colorado, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Rhode Island, South Carolina and Washington. More than 300 colonoscopies were performed throughout the participating states over the two-day period. This program followed the successful Massachusetts Free Colonoscopy Pilot Program during Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month in 2009.

The overall goal was to increase awareness of the need for colorectal cancer screening across the country and provide free screening for those who could not otherwise afford this vital test. The AGA firmly believes that all Americans should have access to lifesaving colorectal cancer screenings. Through this organized event, we conducted a broad-based screening program targeting low income, uninsured adults aged 50 and older, raising awareness across the country of both the need for screening and the need to eliminate the socio-economic discrepancies in those screened.
