Fellow Presenter Spotlight: Viral Patel

March 30, 2016

Dr. Viral Patel discussed his abstract, which focuses on colon cancer prevention, and provided tips for 2016 presenters.

As Digestive Disease Week® (DDW) 2016 approaches, we asked last year's quality-improvement abstract presenters to provide advice and tips (and information about their own presentations) for this year's participants.

AGA will welcome the 2016 selected fellows to present their quality-improvement abstracts and posters during a special DDW session this year, Advancing Clinical Practice: GI Fellow-Directed Quality Improvement Projects. The session, which is scheduled for Monday, May 23, 2016, provides a unique opportunity for fellows to network, learn from one another and more.

Q&A with Viral Patel, MD:

Dr. Viral Patel, of the Northshore University HealthSystem and the University of Chicago, discussed his abstract, which focuses on colon cancer prevention.

Abstract title: Serrated Lesion Detection Rate an Emerging Marker of Quality that Varies with Definition (pdf)

What’s something unique/interesting about your abstract that we may not know? I was able to evolve this research project and won the 2015 ACG Fellows-In-Training Award (Outcomes Research Category) entitled "Screening Colonoscopy Withdrawal Time and Proximal Serrated Polyp Detection Rate: Analysis of a Large Single High Volume Center using Natural Language Processing."

What setting are you planning to go into? Private Practice

Did this abstract have an impact on your future research or career path? Most definitely. Colonoscopy quality is an imperative process of a gastroenterology practice. I've been able to cultivate that interest and now I sit on the Quality Assurance Committee for our department and I plan to be actively involved in the Quality Department in my future practice.

Advice for this year’s presenters: It's so important to have a stellar research mentor. Reach out and network at the national meetings and find someone that is a leader in a field that you have an interest in and bounce ideas off of them. Also, stay focused. I found myself initially having so many ideas/goals and finally found one that was attainable and focused.

Lighting Round

Will we see you at DDW 2016? Yes
What are you most looking forward to? The networking and the sun :)
Something you may not know about me:I love traveling. I've been to 25 countries and 44 of the 50 states. I also signed a contract and will be a part of The Ohio Gastroenterology Group in Columbus, Ohio.
Favorite app? Google Maps (so I can plan my next trip)
