New Medicare Advanced APM Includes GI Inpatient Episodes

GI practices need to apply for consideration for this voluntary Advanced Alternative Payment Model (APM).
A new, voluntary Advanced Alternative Payment Model (APM) will be available to all physicians, including gastroenterologists, participating in Medicare beginning Oct. 1, 2018. Participants can earn additional payments if they meet spending targets that factor in quality for one or more of 32 clinical episodes under this CMS Innovation Center Bundled Payments for Care Improvement advanced model (BPCI Advanced). Payment is tied to performance on quality measures.
While none of the current BPCI Advanced outpatient episodes are GI-related, four of the inpatient clinical episodes are GI or hepatology related:
- Disorders of the liver excluding malignancy, cirrhosis, alcoholic hepatitis (a newly added episode)
- Gastrointestinal hemorrhage
- Gastrointestinal obstruction
- Major bowel procedure
The performance period for BPCI Advanced begins Oct. 1, 2018, and runs through Dec. 31, 2023. Those interested must apply by March 12, 2018, to be considered for participation.
