What is a Patient Advocate?

Nov. 15, 2017

Being a resource for Capitol Hill and helping shape health care policy is crucial to provide your patients with adequate care.

Senators and members of Congress want to know how policies directly impact your patients as they are often far removed from the everyday realities that affect your patients. Often, these personal stories are the most impactful and most powerful items that help shape policy decisions.

As Shazia Mehmood Siddique, MD, and Shivan Mehta, MD, MBA, MSHP, mention, in their AGA Perspectives article, you see the barriers your patients face day in, day out. You help patients navigate through the health care system. You’re also in the unique position of having a respected role in society, a role that members of Congress already turn to for expertise.

Curious about GI advocacy? Dr. Siddique is answering questions in the AGA Community Early Career group for AGA members up to seven years out of their fellowship.
